The Geek Core

Several people have asked me about the software that fuels this website …

“Yes, I know it’s WordPress … but what ELSE!?”

So if you’re technically inclined, or WP is your new method of torture (aka ‘hobby’), here’s what you would want to know about this site!

I’m using Bad Behavior, Akismet and Email Immunizer for security. Not to Me prevents copies of my own comments being emailed to me. Google Sitemaps are used for, the obvious, hehe. Denis de Bernardy’s Static Front Page and Fuzzy Recent Posts are also for the obvious. Custom Query String alphabetizes the entries for each category. CQS is a God-send, but tends to get forgetful after updates and slight upgrades, so it needs reminding every once in a while. ;)

I use WP-ContactForm for my email/contact form, because it’s much prettier code than what I wrote, LOL! PJW Wordpress Version Check makes sure I keep my Wordpress install updated. AdSense-Deluxe lets me control the Google AdSense code, colors, and configuration as well as rotate when needed with minimal template modification. Caching is handled by WP-Cache. Search Meter allows me to track search results and map trends — if I see many searches for a particular dish, I’ll go find a recipe to match it. Search Excerpt modifies the default WordPress search module and allows query highlighting.

WP-Notable automatically adds social/tagging bookmarks to each post. Site Unavailable allows me to work on upgrades, maintenance, and generally muck things up, while notifying visitors of what’s going on. Angsuman’s Permanent Redirect allows me to redirect certain pages without having to modify my HTACCESS files.

The Last 5 Posted and Last 5 Commented tiles are fueled by Rob Marsh, SJ’s Recent Posts and Recent Comments plugins. Draft Notification notifies me when new recipes are waiting to be approved. And last but not least: bbPress Integration synchronizes registrations on the bbPress forums with my WordPress database.

The rest is all template edits and WordPress code. If you’d like to see code snippets of anything, just ask and I’ll be happy to share! :)

The user forums are run by bbPress (by the makers of WordPress). The plugins currently used are: Allow Images, Avatar, bbEmoticons, Memberlist, Google Sitemap Generator, BBPress Private Messaging, Use Display Name, Online List, WordPress Integration, Post Notification, My Resolve Title, Limit Latest Discussion — all of these plugins are available via the bbPress support forums.
